1. Where should I look for the valve to shutt off the water to the whole house in case of emergency?

If you are on a municipal water system, the shutt off valve is inside the meter box, which is usualy located close to the street in front of the house. If you are on a well system then the shutt off valve should be located near the pressure tank either inside the well house or in the crawl space.

2. My water bill seems high, can you help?

If all the faucets are shutting off properly, you may want to see if a toilet is leaking. First, check that the water in the tank is not leaking in the bowl by the way of the overflow pipe. If the water is running into the overflow, adjust the fill valve to stop the water flow approximately one inch from the top of the overflow pipe, or to the water level stamped on the side of the tank. Second, put some food coloring in the tank to test the flush valve mechanism. Wait fifeteen minutes. If the water in the bowl changes color, replace the flapper.

3. The temperature of our hot water seems high. How do I change that?

Most people are comfortable with their hot water set at 120degrees Fahrenheit, which is also the new standard used by the manufacturers when pre-setting it at the factory. If you have an older model, set the thermostat at medium. On a gas model, there is a dial on the front of the gas valve. On electric models, the thermostats (there are usually two) are concealed behind the two panels on the side of the tank. NOTE: turn the electricity off before removing the panels. There are exposed wires behind the panels containing HIGH VOLTAGE.

4. We recently started to run out of hot water very quickly. What may be the problem?

If you have an electric hot water heater, the lower element or thermostat may be faulty, thus only the upper portion of the water gets heated. This type of problem should be evaluated by a qualified technician.

5. We would like to replace the toilet in our home, but heard that the new toilets do not flush properly, and they require multiple flushes. What is the recomandation for a new toilet?

When the federal government mandated that new toilets use no more than 1.6 gallons per flush, manufacturers had a challenge: develop a toilet that achieves this, but also flush properly (clear the bowl) and cary the waste to the city sewer or septic system. There are toilets that can do the job very well. Let us recomend one for you.

6. My shower head and faucet aeretors have a build up of a white substance around the area where the water comes out. Is there anything I can do other then replace them?

The unsightly build up is mineral deposits. You may try the following: take a plastic bag and pour a cup of vinegar in it. Use a twist tie to hold it in place overnight. In the morning, remove the bag and use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the deposits off.

7. Our kitchen drain is taken longer than usual to drain during the past year. Should we have it cleaned?

We recomend a product called Bio-Clean for slow drains. We do not recomend chemical drain cleaners for maintenance s they are hard on the piping. Bio-Clean cleans pipes whithout harming them. Call us to get more information.
